Shadow Assembly

in GOTHIC ROCK/POST GOTHIC/Uncategorized 403 views

Shadow Assembly is a newly formed Gothic Rock recording project made up of Brandon Pybus (vocals, synthesizer) of Sonsombre, and Michael Louis (guitar, bass, drums, synthesizer) of Chronic Twilight.  The resulting sounds are pure Gothic Rock with of the most sinister variety.

Both headstrong songwriters in the Gothic genre, the pair wanted to challenge and expand on what they do best, individually.  Louis’ artistic gratification comes from concentrating solely on writing, recording, and producing instrumental tracks, while Pybus earnestly attends to lyrics, vocals, and mixing.

Sonsombre broke onto the scene in the second half of 2018 with its debut album, A Funeral For The Sun, later to be released by Post Gothic Records.   Pybus’ dramatic vocal style has been well received in the Gothic community.  With A Funeral… and the newly released sophomore album “The Veils of Ending” selling well and generating an underground buzz, it is the same dedication to quality, and all things Goth, that Pybus brings to Shadow Assembly.

Chronic Twilight has been making a name for itself since 2017, now with 3 releases to its’ credit (two of which are on Wave Records), and several videos.  Louis’ musical influences span Glitter Rock, Punk, Ambient, Goth, Progressive, and Americana, which are evident in his songwriting.  Fans of both Chronic Twilight and Sonsombre are sure to enjoy hearing the musical melting pot transpire in Shadow Assembly’s upcoming debut single, Black Shadow of Me.

Ghostcrawl, Shadow Assembly’s debut full-length album, was released digitally in June of 2019, and will have a forthcoming physical release on Oskar TerramortisPost Gothic label.  For more information and updates, like and follow Shadow Assembly’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/ShadowAssembly.

PREVIOUSLY ON POST GOTHIC

Firmly rooted in the Goth Rock tradition of bands like The Wake, Nosferatu, and The Fields of the NephilimSonsombre evokes the sound and feel of the early 90’s second wave.  Founding member, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Brandon Pybus is a long-time veteran of the metal underground, with more than 12 releases to date with bands such as LycanthropyEye of the SunSuhgurimShield Breaker, and Wytch Goat.   In 2016, with a desire to return to the melodic roots and sounds of the classic Goth bands that shaped the genre, but with a nod to modern classics such as NFDSonsombre was conceptualized.

Several songs were recorded but not released.  Then, in early 2018 the concept was resurrected and more songs were recorded.  As the project took shape, “A Funeral For The Sun” emerged.  In the hopes that this release would re-create the feelings and emotions listening to bands like Suspiria, The Sisters of MercyRosetta Stone, and the like, the decision was made to release the record independently and with no conception of how it would be received.  Fortunately, the response was immediate and positive, with many DJs, podcasters, and Goth Rock fans from around the globe expressing their appreciation for the spirit and execution of “A Funeral For The Sun”.

Oskar Terramortis’ Post Gothic records will release “A Funeral For The Sun” as a limited edition digipaCk in January of 2019.  The body of Oskar’s work from Gothic Music Records and Post Gothic records make this a perfect fit.  Sonsombre is currently working on a follow-on album tentatively scheduled for release in the Spring of 2019 and is preparing for live dates throughout 2019 in support of these releases.

PREVIOUSLY ON GOTHIC ROCK

Double Echo began in 2012 as a studio collaboration between producers Chris Luna (San Diego, California) Ash Lerczak (Liverpool, UK) that set out to re-mystify the forgotten practices of post-punk and primitive soundtrack electronica in the guise of a lost band from 1982 whose demo tape 4ADnever got around to listening to. Their first release, the “Black Morning” EP, invited listeners to “dream of another world” of floating Casio keyboards and Sad Lovers And Giants guitars, demonstrating that their commitment to eighties authenticity went deeper than merely an aesthetic gimmick and found Double Echo a cult following on Bandcamp.

The following year in Liverpool – Double Echo played their first show as a live band. Determined not to go out as a “laptop act”, Chris and Ash performed alongside a dying, time-code striped tape machine and TR626, while smoke, weird projections and an extremely loud amplifier created a suitably immersive atmosphere. The show convinced local label EDILS to release the “Phantomime” album on CD and cassette, which was shortly followed by a compilation of Double Echo’s online output by Ritual Tapes in the US.

A second album, “La Danza” featuring new member Ellon Souter on lead vocals and a strong emphasis on cold synths, was released in 2015 on CD by Gothic Music (Finland) and on vinyl by Peter Out Records (Sweden) leading to their first European dates – a tour of darkwave clubs in Italy. Since then Double Echo have retreated into their home studios to work on a series of follow up albums (the first of which nears completion at time of writing) pausing briefly in 2016 to self-release the “Ancient Youth” EP and to perform at Return To The Batcave festival in Poland.

This summer Double Echo will appear at Lumous Gothic Festival in Finland.

A must-hear for those with a penchant for John Maus’ drawly, slightly incoherent vocal mannerisms and music as floaty and ephemeral as a wisp of smoke. Low slung baselines ride over spare drum machine beats, guitars and synths do battle to see who can conjure up the most melancholy air. You don’t need to see this band in order to imagine shoes getting stared at. But menacingly...” DANGEROUSMINDS.COM

DOUBLE ECHO transport you, quickly, into a smoky, dimly lit basement club in the middle of the 1980′s. Familiar, dance insistent, synth patterns and baritone vocals consume the room as you make come-get-me eyes at a fellow, rhythmically challenged, post-punk night dweller.” SEXBEATLONDON.COM
